Shanghai, China | October 2, 2015
“The opportunity has always been there. It’s just about the appetite for risk.” – Jason Swamy (HK promoter, DWYL, Wonderfruit, HK)
International Music Summit, the premier platform for thought leadership in electronic music, has concluded the inaugural edition of IMS China in Shanghai. On October 2nd, international and local artists, business leaders and visionaries congregated at the Hyatt on the Bund in Shanghai.
IMS China is a collaboration between IMS and A2Live / STORM Festival, along with event partners Budweiser, Delta and Dreamworker Communications. IMS China attracted 250 delegates from 17 different countries with over 40 international and local media outlets in attendance.
“All I hear is that it’s not going to work. But we’re all here for a reason. People believe that it will work.” – Eddie Dean (Director, Pacha Macau & Pacha NYC, USA)
“Awakening the Dragon” was a one-day summit designed to explore and discuss the immense potential of China as a new market for electronic music. Panels like “Getting It Right the First Time,” “Brands in China,” “The Great Firewall,” and “Events in China” explored vital topics for the flourishing market such as the lack of access to Internet platforms and the rapidly growing nightlife industry in relation to sponsorships in China.
IMS co-founder Ben Turner states: “This was a fascinating first insight into this region. The potential in IMS and in China is clear to us all… Today was an amazing first start. Seeing some of the world’s most established industry leaders taking notes from the leading Chinese players was a joy to watch. It’s hard to believe IMS has landed here in China. A big thank you to Eric Zho, his A2Live / STORM team and team IMS for making it a reality.”
Founder of A2Live / STORM Festival Eric Zho states: “IMS China has brought a wealth of knowledge and relationship to foster the domestic electronic music industry, I am looking forward to see the next edition in action! This is the first time a major international music conference has set foot in China, and I am hopeful that this will open the flood gate for a lot of businesses in the region.”
Highlights of the event included a call to action for all international artists to open up social media accounts with local Chinese platforms and look to establish a connection through the local language and tools. As the founder of Noel Lee from Monster Products put it: “If you want to be in China, be in China.” Monster was the foundation of what would eventually become Monster Beats, and later Beats by Dre.
“It’s almost important to ignore how it works well in America or Europe. Our focus should be on business in 2015, not how we’ve gotten here over the past 20 years.” – Kurosh Nasseri (Co-Founder AFEM / Attorney / Manager for Paul Van Dyk, USA)
Our speakers were a highlight of IMS China. A diverse range of speakers from Maggie Huang, President of Entertainment and TMT Division of Fosun Group, Andrew Bull of Shine Communications, Irene Yang of MIDI Festival, Eelko van Kooten of Spinnin Records shared incredibly valuable insight. A combination of international experience and local knowledge made IMS China a successful opening to the massive and promising market of China.
The final panel was a keynote interview with renowned international artist Paul Oakenfold, who shared his extensive experience as a pioneer of the Asia region. Oakenfold was the first artist to play on The Great Wall of China as well as one of the first to tour through Asia and shared his valuable insight for the promising future of this market.
IMS China concluded with a celebratory delegates dinner and after parties headlined by Gaby Endo and Paul Oakenfold. On October 3rd and 4th, our delegates and speakers will head to IMS China’s partner event, Budweiser STORM Festival with headliners Tiësto, Skrillex, Above & Beyond and many more.
International Music Summit has grown to become one of the leading presences in electronic music, expanding across the globe with editions in Ibiza, Los Angeles, Singapore and for the first time, Shanghai, China this year.
“Electronic music is one of the most worldwide, influential music products. The energy of EDM is without language.” – Noel Lee (Founder, Chairman & CEO Monster Products)
