With electronic music becoming more popular and commercial, this value was taken away from the movement. A lot of electronic music events are now taking place in super clubs, or luxury festivals that only the few can afford. While commercialization is natural, there is a responsibility to ensure that the communities who built it in the first place not only continue to have access but are also a part of that financial ecosystem.

It has since developed a multitude of meanings, some of them more accurate than others, to refer to the additional layers of discrimination that other groups of marginalized communities face in addition to gender: race, age, sexual orientation, economic background and class, disability etc. Given dance music was primarily born in gay and black communities, this discussion aims to explore those intersections to highlight that diversity extends beyond gender.
