SMIRNOFF SOUND COLLECTIVE TEAMS UP WITH IMS IBIZA FOR ITS “EQUALISING MUSIC” INITIATIVE

We welcome Smirnoff Sound Collective™ at our 10th anniversary and are excited by Smirnoff’s™ pledge to foster Gender Diversity in Electronic Music – a commitment by the brand introduced on International Women’s Day 2017.

The campaign highlights shocking industry statistics to draw awareness to the gender issue in electronic music. Did you know only 17% of electronic music festival headliners in 2016 were female? And only 5% producers? The ambition is to double the number of female headliners by 2020 together with key industry partners.

After kicking-off with a global announcement on International Women’s Day w/ Events in New York, London and Berlin it is time for the next step. Meet the Smirnoff Sound Collective Team Leila Fataar (Head of Culture and Entertainment for Diageo Europe), Julia Weber (Culture and Entertainment Manager, Germany) and Nicholas Cornbleet (Smirnoff Brand Manager) at the Smirnoff IMS beach lounge to explore how to drive the change. What does the industry need? What projects should be supported? How can we educate the next generation and give talented artists a bigger stage? The Smirnoff Sound Collective Team is here to soundboard and discuss ideas and their Beach Lounge is open daily from 11am-8pm.

Together with shesaid.so, Smirnoff Sound Collective™ will host a Diversity Debate on Thursday May 25th entitled “Balancing the Ratio – How the Industry needs to address Gender Disparity in Electronic Music” which will be moderated by Mark Lawrence (AFEM) and feature the Panelists Andreea Magdalina (shesaid.so, Founder), Leila Fataar (Diageo, Head of Culture & Entertainment), Miss Kittin (Artist), Ralf Kollmann (Mobilee, Co-Founder), Terry Weerasinghe (Beatport, GM & SVP Beatport).

The IMS Debate is followed by a “Diversity Roundtable” Brunch on May 26th at the Smirnoff Sound Collective IMS Beach Lounge. Over Smirnoff Bloody Marys leading Industry Player are invited to get to the bottom of the complexities of the deep-rooted Disparity issue and foster ideas and action steps that could enable a genuine,
long-lasting change.

Smirnoff has adopted a long-term approach to ensure genuinely effective solutions, working to a three-year strategy with International Music Summit as the leading Industry Platform, using IMS’ connections to enlist talent and organizations who are not only recognized for their credibility in electronic music but also for championing this cause independently, Smirnoff’s first step has been to secure a pledge from industry gatekeepers best placed to help fight the cause for gender parity.

“Equalizing Music” began with a push for industry partners to get involved. By signing a pledge, each partner made a commitment to increase representation. Some key industry leaders who have signed include Spotify, Pitchfork, iHeartRadio, Deltic Group, Mixmag, THUMP, Broadly and more. Together, these organizations are advancing gender representation across performance bookings, exposure in media and other opportunities.
