1 June 2010

Working Group To Develop New “DJ Index” As Sun Sets On Most Successful IMS
3rd Ibiza International Music Summit 2010
Ibiza Gran Hotel, Ibiza, 26th–28th May

  • 82.1% believe business is in a better state than 12 months ago
  • 94.7% agree with the need to credit producers on digital formats
  • Cream’s James Barton wins IMS Pioneer Award 2010
  • Coca-Cola Group launch new production initiative at IMS
  • Sony Music unveil Calvin Harris as A&R Executive at IMS

An agenda-setting Ibiza International Music Summit ended its most successful conference to date with an ambitious working group being set up to develop an accurate and authoritative new DJ popularity index.

The move was agreed after an open meeting, with the working group of artists, managers, booking agents, club owners, record label executives, retailers and radio representing acts across the electronic music spectrum.

The concept will be taken to the Official Charts Company once the principles are agreed, with a desired launch date of 1st January 2010.

Mixmag has pledged its support for the new IMS-conceived chart, with editor Nick Decosemo committing to a page on it in each issue, and a cover in January of every year. Interest in a new chart has increased in the last 12 months, with 81% of IMS 2010 delegates in favour, versus 76% at IMS 2009.

With registrations up on 2009, the overall mood of IMS 2010 was of a sector resurgent after years of touring and steadily building up fanbases online.  An opening report revealed that electronic music accounted for a whopping 7.5% of album sales in the UK and that licensed capacity of dance festivals in the US now stood at 350,000.

During his Big Dog DJ: F*** You I’m Famous interview, superstar DJ David Guetta felt his success with bands like the Black Eyed Peas was helping to open doors for the genre at US radio, record labels and across the media.

IMS’s keynote interviewee Mark Ronson added that there hadn’t been enough great new Hip Hop coming through to fill out traditional Hip Hops sets, so those DJs were experimenting with house, which served to make the genre more acceptable.  He also revealed details of his forthcoming album, featuring collaborations with Simon le Bon, Q-Tip, Wiley, Boy George, Spankrock and US electronic artist MNDR.

The Meet The Future – The Artists panel meanwhile, featuring Skream, Arthur Velasquez and R1’s Annie Mac, Heidi and Toddla T is fast becoming the stuff of legend. Panelist Busy P’s insistence that a bottle of Hierbas Ibicencas Liqueur (offered by moderator Nick Decosemo for the best question) be opened immediately led the fast-slurping panel to quickly descend into near-anarchy on stage.

This followed the launch by Coca Cola’s Burn energy drink of Burn Studios, a cloud-based digital platform where professionals and raw talent can come together to access to authentic state-of-the-art music making tools and share musical brilliance.
On the afternoon of the last day, delegates, complete with election-style digital voting devices, were asked to vote on a number of key issues. 94.7% agreed with Tommy D’s plea to credit producers on digital formats, while only 34.1% of delegates felt the majors would stick with Dance labels this time round (full results below).

Said Pete Tong, IMS co-founder/partner “I'm very happy to report after our 3rd year that the IMS continues to grow - both as an inspiring and enlightening electronic music business gathering where our delegates can get up close and personal with many of world's leaders in the field, and as the host to a unique collection of live shows that are open to the public, especially the breathtaking closing event at Dalt Vila high up in Ibiza's old Town. It’s one of those rare and special places where the venue is the real star and we aim to expand on the concept in 2011.”

Ben Turner, IMS co-founder/partner commented "The positivity coming out of IMS 2010 is hugely reflective of what is happening to this genre around the world at the moment. To see huge brands and major recording labels making exclusive announcements to the IMS conference room/debating floor is a huge testament to the delegation this event is attracting each year."

Said Ted Cohen, TAG Strategic “IMS is the most exhilarating conference I’ve ever participated in.”

The event, which has already been described as the TED of electronic dance music (TED is an annual convention of global technology, entertainment and design luminaries), wrapped up with Cream owner James Barton taken by surprise as he was presented with the IMS Pioneer award 2010, in recognition of the importance of the live sector and his services to it via his global Creamfields brand.

Said Ben Turner "James Barton has nurtured the Cream brand for over 15 years and now has a foothold in almost every major territory with the very pure Creamfields festival concept. The huge roar in the room when his name was announced kind of says all you need to know about what his empire has done for this music worldwide.”

Commented James Barton "It was a real honour and a complete surprise to pick up this year's Pioneer award at the IMS. It was made even more special that the people who gave me this award included Pete Tong, Danny Whittle, Mark Netto and my good friend Ben Turner who are all pioneers within this industry. The award completes an amazing year for me and Cream, and is totally appreciated."

The Grand Finale live event at Dalt Vila, the UNESCO heritage site that towers over Ibiza town was a sell out, packed crowds treated to the sounds of Mark Ronson (DJ set), Pete Tong, Sasha, Skream, Buraka Som Sistema and Sunday Best signing David E Sugar in arguably the finest location for dance music in the world. It may have been only the second time the Grand Finale had taken place but it already felt like a vital part of the Ibiza season - its opening party.

The IMS website will carry films of all the seminars and panels so, if you couldn't make it this year, head there now to discover what you missed http://www.internationalmusicsummit.com/html/videos10.php

With this year’s International Music Summit (IMS) in Ibiza just 7 weeks away and looking bigger and better than ever, we’re thrilled to now announce the line-up for the Grand Finale Festival at the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site in Dalt Vila. Quite possibly, the finest open-air live music venue in the world!

This year IMS have pulled out all the stops, assembling an eclectic array of talent and bringing together a uniquely different festival line-up to Ibiza. Underlining the IMS mantra of being forward-thinking in everything they do. This will be an amazing finale.

The headline live act on the night is Buraka Som Sistema, the Portuguese ghettotech 4-piece who recently achieved a Christmas number 1 in Spain’s main pop charts, all off the back of a sync – an incredible achievement. Support will also come from David E Sugar, the latest signing to Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best Recordings label, who’s currently supporting Deadmau5 on tour.

Alongside IMS co-founder and curator Pete Tong, confirmed DJs on the night include a rare DJ set from Mark Ronson who, despite being better known as an award-winning pop producer these days, is and always has been one of the best DJ’s of his generation. We have arguably the most exciting man in dance music today, Skream, who will bring his unique, open-minded dubstep sound to the Ibizan sunshine for the first time ever. And last, but by no means least we have a stone-cold legend in the shape of Sasha, a man who has been at the top of his game ever since he started playing raves in 1989 – going on to set the benchmark for everything that’s possible as a DJ.

Mark Ronson "I'm very much looking forward to DJ'ing as well as keynote speaking at IMS 2010. It's the only party in Ibiza's World Heritage Site, Dalt Vila, a glorious location for this killer line-up of Skream & Buraka Som Sistema as well as Sasha and Tong and myself. Word."

Pete Tong We are very proud of this line-up for the IMS Grand Finale Festival in Dalt Vila. To bring such a festival-style line-up to this World Heritage site, including recent Spanish number-one act Buraka Som Sistema, is a great achievement. Ronson, Sasha, Skream, plus two very forward-thinking live acts including David E Sugar, it's the perfection reflection of everything we've set-out to achieve with the International Music Summit. We're about shining the spotlight on innovation, and this line-up is a clear reflection of some of the freshest and most established names in the global electronic music space."

Since it’s launch in 2008, IMS has developed into the leading event for those working in electronic music, attracting industry leaders and media to Ibiza for 3-days of thought-provoking discussion and innovation. Created by a team including BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong, IMS is setup by professionals for professionals and is centered around networking and presenting the latest developments. With influential guest speakers from The Coca-Cola Group, Ministry of Sound, Resident Advisor, BBC Radio 1 and a keynote interview with Mark Ronson already confirmed for 2010, the IMS also prides itself on it’s spectacular Grand Finale Festival at Ibiza’s most inspiring location. The event is free to attend for all delegates of the IMS, with some 2,000 tickets available to the public.

INTERNATIONAL MUSIC SUMMIT 2010:  FIRST LINE UP REVEALED
Ibiza Gran Hotel, May 26-28

  • Mark Ronson To Star In Keynote Interview
  • David Guetta, Annie Mac, Erick Morillo, DJ Skream, Pedro Winter / Busy P, Arthur Baker, Robin Millar To Speak
  • Alexandra Patsavas appears at her first dance music event
  • Speakers from Sprite, Coca-Cola Group, Ministry of Sound, BBC Radio 1, KCRW, MP7, Beatport, Resident Advisor All Confirmed

Monday 8th February: Leading electronic artists and representatives of some of the world’s biggest brands are among those confirmed to speak at the third International Music Summit with superstar producer, DJ and artist Mark Ronson confirmed to appear in the headline keynote interview.

Commandeering the entire five-star Ibiza Gran Hotel, IMS creates an intimate atmosphere where artists such as the 2010 Grammy Award winner David Guetta can meet with notable business leaders such as Frank Mertens, Global Director of Creative Development Sprite / Coca-Cola Group and Konrad Von Loeheysen, the owner of Ministry of Sound Germany / Motor FM.

In her first dance music event appearance, the world-renowned music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas will feature in a one-on-one interview about her work and company Chop Shop. Patsavas is supervisor on TV shows The OC, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Mad Men and Gossip Girl plus the Twilight film.

Guetta appears on a panel titled Big Dog DJs: F*** You We're Famous, named after his legendary weekly party in Ibiza, alongside Erick Morillo from Subliminal Records. IMS founder and BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong will moderate.

In Meet The Future, BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, who recently swapped shows with Tong to open the countdown to the weekend, will outline her vision for electronic music alongside the likes of Pedro Winter aka Busy P, former manager of Daft Punk and boss of Ed Banger Records. Joining them is DJ Skream, remixer of the moment.

In another panel USA Today: Boom Boom Now!, IMS will hear from both those behind dance music’s recent explosion in the states, including Patrick Moxey from Ultra Records, Eddie Dean from Pacha New York and original American dance architect Arthur Baker, and also from dissenting voices like Tommie Sunshine who recently stated: "There is NO room for dance music in America. It will never happen. Not real dance music, anyway". The panel will be moderated by KCRW music director and presenter Jason Bentley, who last year received the first IMS Pioneer Award.

In Ibiza United, IMS will bring together the key players behind Amnesia, Eden, Es Paradis, Pacha, Privilege and Space on one panel for just the second time ever. This panel will be moderated by Juan Suarez, one of the chiefs of the powerful local newspaper, Diario De Ibiza.

IMS will hear from legendary producer Robin Millar, responsible for 44 number one hits, who will talk about why just one month after he retired from production duties, electronic music has re-inspired him, and see the return of 19-year old teen promoter Callum Negus Fancey from Let's Go Crazy after stealing the show last year by stating "Who is Paul Oakenfold? My audience have never heard of him."

In addition, IMS has teamed up with leading consumer portal Resident Advisor, whose audience will select a topic and speakers for the Presidential Debate format which debuted in 2009 to great acclaim.

Said Pete Tong: "It is with great pride that we announce some of the incredible
talent already confirmed to be involved in our third International Music Summit in Ibiza. For 2010 we continue to push for the most vital and engaging debates on all the key topics of the day involving the biggest players from every field.”

Commented Ben Turner, a founder and partner in the IMS, states: "IMS was never about the artists, more the people behind the curtain who help guide the gifted. In 2010, we've been overwhelmed by approaches from artists to be involved in some way. It's a great testament to our first two years. Watch out for more special names to follow..."

Following 2009’s successful experiment The IMS Vote, a session where the audience make decisions on the future of the genre, will return. Indeed, last year, 69% of those present agreed that IMS had 'made them question how their companies work'. In 2010, this is taken one step further then Ted Cohen from TAG Strategic will moderate a one-hour session where the panelists are the audience, and the agenda is not set. Cohen himself was so inspired by IMS:09 that he invited last year's Key Note speaker Richie Hawtin to attend MidemNet after hearing his radical assessment of future music.

Finally reprising his 2009 role, electronic pioneer Tom Middleton will blog to the Beatport community what is being debated, who will in turn feedback and pose questions to the speakers.

Once again the IMS Grand Finale will take place at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Dalt Vila on Friday May 28. Last year, Basement Jaxx headlined with Pete Tong, Rob da Bank and Filthy Dukes in support. IMS has been with requests from artists to perform at this landmark event. The headline acts will be announced imminently. The event is free to attend for all delegates of the IMS, with some 2,000 tickets available to the public. Tickets are available now from www.internationalmusicsummit.com

Pioneer and Sol Beer Confirmed As Partners For Dance Music's most important annual summit

  • International Music Summit Partners With Founding Sponsors Pioneer And Sol Beer For Third Consecutive Year

The International Music Summit (Ibiza Gran Hotel, May 26-28) has renewed its partnerships with Pioneer, leading manufacturer of industry standard DJ equipment, and the popular Mexican Sol Beer for the third consecutive year.
Hosted by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong and with superstar producer, DJ and artist Mark Ronson confirmed to appear in the headline keynote interview, IMS brings together the leading executives and artists in the electronic music industry. IMS presents a unique opportunity for brands to engage with one of the music industry’s most vibrant sectors. Electronic music is seeing an epic return to form in 2010 with dance music topping the charts in every major territory, including America, and with electronic music producers in high demand from mainstream artists the world over.

Alexandra Patsavas, world renowned music supervisor on TV shows The OC, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Mad Men, in her first dance music event appearance will feature in a one-on-one interview about her work in placing electronic music across some of the most popular TV series in America.

Other names confirmed to speak at the event include Grammy Award winner David Guetta, BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, Subliminal Records’ Erick Morillo and remixer of the moment Skream.

Following the success of the past two years IMS 2010 will, for the first time, commandeer the entire Ibiza Gran Hotel for the duration of the event. With the Summit continuing to grow, Pioneer and Sol Beer will benefit from amplified branding across previously sponsored assets and increased marketing and promotion both on the island and in the run up to the event. In addition, IMS organisers have announced that they have availability for one additional leading international brand to add to its roster of top-tier sponsors.

Pioneer and Sol Beer will also present the IMS Gran Finale Festival held at Dalt Villa, on the peak of Ibiza Town… a UNESCO world heritage site. The party is widely regarded as the firstmain event launching the Ibiza party season and has been referred to as "the best party Ibiza has ever seen" due to its iconic location, cutting edge lineups and popularity with the local population. Sol Beer will be the official beer of IMS 2010 and will host, brand and supply all beer at the bars for both Dalt Villa parties and the IMS showcase events on the first two nights of the summit.

Mark Grotefield, Head of Marketing at Pioneer will present the IMS Pioneer Award to a leading light in the international electronic community. This will be presented at a dinner and charity auction where memorabilia from the global dance community will be auctioned in aid of the Hepatitis C Trust.

IMS has consistently led the way in exploring how the music industry and brands can forge successful partnerships, and the continued support of both Pioneer and Sol Beer is testament to the summit’s importance. IMS expects to announce further partnerships in the coming months.

Said Ben Turner, IMS founder "We are delighted to have both brands continuing their deep-rooted association with IMS. Both relationships are perfect brand fits for the IMS and the ever-expanding event, and there is a very strong belief and understanding from both brands about the future potential of what we are creating here. IMS could not happen without both Pioneer and Sol Beer. The electronic music industry as a whole should be thankful for their support."

Said Mark Grotefeld, Head of Marketing for Pioneer Multimedia Division, Europe, "Pioneer is proud to partner again with the International Music Summit for the third year. IMS manages to continually surpass our expectations, and The IMS Grand Finale festival at the peak of Ibiza Town last year has put the event on the map worldwide. IMS represents the most significant and focused forum in the world for engaging with players in the dance music community. Pioneer is very proud to be a part of it, and we see our collaboration continuing as the event continues its exceedingly fast growth plan."

Said Christian Eschenbach, Commercial Manager for Sol Beer, North and Central Europe, Sol Beer is delighted to continue supporting the IMS in its third year. We are thrilled with the success the conference and parties have had which are clear testaments of the professional people involved in it. Ben Turner and his team are true visionaries.”
