Five Calls To Action from IMS Asia-Pacific

The fourth annual IMS Asia-Pacific concluded yesterday September 22, 2017. Over 500 delegates and speakers attended from around the world and debated the most pressing topics facing the region. Below are the five central calls to action that resulted from the two intensive and productive days.

1. FOCUS ON KOREA! THE TERRITORY IS LEADING THE WAY WITH ELECTRONIC MUSIC ENGAGEMENT IN ASIA-PACIFIC

Day one opened with the AC Nielsen Asia-Pacific Dance Music Study, which revealed dance music continues to remain hugely popular in the region, hitting the top five of all music genres in all markets except Japan, with Koreans most likely of all markets to listen to dance music and to be ‘dedicated listeners’.

This trend was reinforced by the China Electronic Music Market report presented on day two by Net Ease Cloud Music, which estimated 2.86 hundred million users of electronic music in 2017 and confirmed electronic music as the second most preferred genre amongst users in China.

2. THE DIGITAL STORM: STREAMING POSES THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY IN THE REGION

Net Ease Cloud Music alone has “over 300,000 electronic music downloads each day and more than 620,000 playlists live per day”.

Scarlett Li noted in her keynote China: The Opportunity Is Now, “Digital music today is a real business, there will be an estimated 2 billion USD market for paid streaming service by 2020.”

3. HOMEGROWN HEADLINERS IS THE GOAL

Festival promoters within Asia-Pacific made a clear declaration that the main goal is to find headliners from within their territories. Doung Anh Minh from Lost in Music in Vietnam stated that the day is “near” in his market when the homegrown talent headlines, and the international acts support.

4. ARTISTS MUST TAILOR THEIR APPROACH TO INDIVIDUAL MARKETS IF THEY WANT TO SUCCEED

As Sebastian Ingrosso noted in his keynote “there is a big difference between Asia markets, we change our set up from country to country.” For Ingrosso and his manager Amy Thompson, collaboration with rising local talent is key to building a fanbase in new Asian markets and IMS Asia-Pacific was their platform to announce their newest collaboration “Sun is Shining” with upcoming Chinese talent Kiki.

5. IMS SPEAKERS CREATE A “TEN POINT PLAN” TO CULTIVATING THE UNDERGROUND AND COMPLETING THE ECO-SYSTEM
